[ NNSquad ] Comments on NNSquad Purpose

Judging by the rather surprised media reaction to recent Comcast and
other attacks on a neutral Internet, it's clear that before anything
happens to correct the problems a great deal of education is required.
The functions of "detection, analysis, and incident reporting" are
exactly what needs to be done.

But there are difficulties. First, because ISPs are not currently
subject to common carriage rules they can pretty much do anything they
want as long as they conform to their published terms of service which
are usually written to allow just about anything the ISP cares to do.
Second, the term "net neutrality" has been used in a very narrow
context: charging for performance", an entirely different problem then
the recent incidents. To me the former is a much greater problem than
the latter.

What did people expect when they started using cable companies as their
ISPs? Cable companies have always be in control of what their customers
see and the Internet (to them) is just an extension of their
entertainment function.

I'm afraid there's a long, dark road ahead.

Bob Ellis
