Google URL Shortener goes public

http://bit.ly/aenFZP (Google Social Web Blog)

Google's goo.gl shortening service has now been
opened up for general use.

Back when it was announced for limited use, I made queries about
whether or not Google would "escrow" the associated links with a third
party, as does (for example) bit.ly. This helps to protect links
against changes in business circumstances and operations that might be
difficult to foresee today.

At the time, I was told that Google was considering this. I have
now again made inquiries on this issue.
