EU approves government hacking of computers without warrants http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article5439604.ece - - - This isn't strictly a network neutrality issue, but is related in an interesting manner, given that the "legal basis" of such "hacking" could be closely akin to legal theories used to approve ISP-based surveillance. Note that absent cooperating hardware or OS backdoors, the techniques described, except for break-and-enter operations, depend on security lapses that we continually warn people against permitting on their systems and networks. So to a significant extent, the ability of authorities to use such remote techniques will depend on the level of routine security already present for these systems. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein lauren@vortex.com or lauren@pfir.org Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 http://www.pfir.org/lauren Co-Founder, PFIR - People For Internet Responsibility - http://www.pfir.org Co-Founder, NNSquad - Network Neutrality Squad - http://www.nnsquad.org Founder, PRIVACY Forum - http://www.vortex.com Member, ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Lauren's Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com
