I'm writing from my house in rural France. (We're 10 km from the nearest
place to buy a loaf of bread, 15 km from the nearest place you could call a
town.) Our only telecoms supplier here is France Telecom. We have a
little over 1Mb/s ADSL -- good enough for watchable live TV streams -- plus
telephone service with unlimited calling to Europe and North America and
half an hour of calls to mobile phones in France. That package costs 49
euros per month. If we lived in an urban area, where there's some
competition, the same amount could get us a package at 8Mb/s, it would
include TV, and the unlimited calling would include the Western hemisphere
and China, and perhaps other countries.
FYI. I'm curious what a corresponding set of services costs in the USA.
