French moving ahead with massive (and certainly ineffective) Internet censorship plan

http://bit.ly/8ZxoqQ (Good Gear Guide)

Before readers start sending me the usual "those guys are idiots, it
will never work!" responses ...

Remember ... the politicians pushing this sort of crap generally have
technical advisors, and understand that it won't actually work for the
stated purposes. These laws (from legislators' standpoints) are
purely political, so that they can claim to their less well-informed
constituents that they've "done something" about the horrible
Internet. That's one of the reasons why a normally "third-rail"
issue like c-porn is so handy as a facilitator to push these things
through.

And short of reactivating the bagne de Cayenne in French Guiana,
casting the Internet as the great evil communicator carries a lot
of political bang for the buck, er .. franc, uh, euro.
