constant presence in 802.11 capable locations, making 3G unnecessary...

I bet that will be the case for many people since we will typically watch video from fixed locations over WiFi and use cellular when mobile.


WiFi was invented for LANs (for connecting NCR cash registers), but it has become part of our wireless infrastructure. WiFi and cellular connectivity are somewhat fungible.

Jiwire.com lists 320 (141 free) WiFi locations within five miles of my zip code. If they average 3 mbps backhaul, that would be about 1 gbps. I wonder how that compares to cellular connectivity in my area and how they compare nationally.
