You may be aware that the FCC, under its broadband plan, is seeking to determine the amount and quality of broadband that is deployed to the end user (generally residential).  We are undertaking  an effort similarly to Ofcom in the UK for wireline services to do a sampled survey and hope eventually to scale this process.

A more recent and perhaps experimental effort is being undertaken with regards to wireless.  Here using crowd sourcing techniques, we intend to use volunteers using smart phones to map wireless data network coverage and quality in the US.  (I would expect that in addition to company, cell tower ID, signal strength and data rate could be acquired.)

This is actually data not in the public domain and should prove interesting.

We are seeking to make the academic community aware of the Public Notice describing this and hoping to get comment re methodologies, issues, data items, etc.
