"AT&T wants to get rid of obsolete PSTN equipment, and those pesky
    FCC rules."

The true agenda of these folks isn't very hard to discern. Note how
in the same breath that they bemoan having to support legacy services,
they argue for doing away with basic telephone regulations, and
declare Net Neutrality to be evil. And at the same time, they make
the ludicrous argument that the USA dominant ISP industry is truly
competitive -- even as we pay the highest prices and have the lowest
Internet speeds of virtually any country in the developed world,
thanks to decades of telco and cable company lies and manipulations.
Remember, these are the same fellows who have lied to communities and
regulators for decades about data service deployments, have actively
blocked municipalities from setting up their own ISPs -- and much
more. Since we can assume these guys aren't idiots or drugged out
while on these panels, one can only assume dissembling on a truly
colossal scale. Anyone who thinks there's going to be a transition to
an all IP phone network by 2018 -- just try get your head around the
range of services and equipment involved, even putting aside the
regulatory and financial issues -- is living in the deepest, darkest
dungeon in Fantasyland.
