kind of ad targeting that will let brands market to users based on
what they've bought in stores, according to execs briefed on their
plans."

My gut feeling is that the "creepy line" will be crossed by firms that
match up outside purchases with social networking profiles without the
explicit and specific permission of users *beforehand*. There would
seem to be serious risk of user and regulatory backlash if such prior
permission is not obtained, irrespective of anonymization efforts.
