Adobe goes subscription only, giving alternative open source software
an enormous boost

    classic traditional software company. Today, it's trying to hammer
    some of the last few nails into that coffin."

Coffin may be right.  The problem is that at the pricing levels
they're setting, this amounts to an expensive forced updating regime
for products that many users are comfortable without updating for
years at a time, especially when increasingly powerful open source
alternatives are already available in this space.
