And you can find similar stories dating back to this point and earlier
about a vast number of other countries' surveillance capabilities.
Point being, this is endemic. It's not going away anytime soon, and
will not be changed significantly on a unilateral basis. So encryption,
to at least discourage *mass* suveillance of this type (as opposed to
targeted surveillance), continues to be good policy.
