The local policemen responsible for student relations at my daughters' old high school did this as well. He set up a profile as a new girl who was coming to the school from out of town and then friended a bunch of the 8th graders heading into the high school. The kids promptly caught on to the fact that the "student's" only initial friend had been the daughter of the policeman, and began leaving long and insulting posts on "her" wall. Today's kids really don't need to be told that on the internet, nobody knows you're a dog.

Building a social networking identity with depth takes time (and multiple accounts). For a prescient science fiction novel on that subject, read Melissa Scott's "The Jazz" (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0312875428/somewherecom). "Jazz" is her term for building up internet memes using multiple accounts and postings until they go viral. It's a good word for the internet version of astroturfing.
